Rows of red seats inside a classic theatre

About Voleroni

An independent movie blog with one obsession: the cinema of the wager — casino epics, poker dramas, heist classics and every story where somebody bets more than they should.

Who We Are

A Small Magazine About a Very Specific Kind of Film

Voleroni is an editorial movie blog run by people who believe the gambling film is one of cinema's great underrated genres — a tradition that stretches from 1960s poker rooms to modern thrillers about odds, debts and obsession.

We're not a casino, a betting site or an affiliate operation. Gambling only exists here as a subject for cinema — the green felt is our beat in the same way a crime desk covers courtrooms. What we care about is how films are made, how they play, and why the best of them hold up decades later.

The site is written for readers in Australia and everywhere else who'd rather argue about the last hand of The Cincinnati Kid than check an actual score.

How We Review Movies

The Same Test, Every Time

  1. We watch the whole film — usually more than once

No review runs on a single pass. First viewing for the ride, second for the seams.

  2. We score against six shared criteria

Storytelling, performances, atmosphere, direction, cultural impact and entertainment value — the desk's standing scorecard.

  3. We write for readers, not algorithms

Every review asks the question you actually care about: is this worth your two hours tonight?

  4. We stand by the score — until we don't

Opinions evolve with rewatches, and rankings get revised in public. Conviction, not stubbornness.

Our editorial philosophy is simple: take the genre seriously, never take ourselves too seriously, and always tell you what we'd actually watch.

The Voleroni Editorial Team

That means praising a flawed crowd-pleaser when it's genuinely thrilling, and marking down a prestige title when it deals a cold hand. It also means being clear about who we are: a movie blog about gambling as a theme — never a place that sells it.
